COBRA Administration

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) allows you to continue your group insurance coverage after a qualifying event by self-paying your insurance premiums. Whichever COBRA eligible insurance benefits you and your family were enrolled in before your qualifying event are eligible to continue under COBRA. Your employer will allow you to choose which previously enrolled insurance benefits you would like to continue.

For example, if you were previously enrolled in the group medical, dental, and vision coverage, then you can choose between those 3 benefits you would like to continue under COBRA.  You do have the option to not continue any coverage.

If you are currently enrolled in COBRA and would like to access your COBRA account, please visit your COBRAPoint portal.  You can make a payment through your COBRAPoint portal.

How Does It Work?

If you lose benefit eligibility either due to employment termination, retirement, reduction of hours, or any other COBRA qualifying event, you’ll become eligible to elect a continuation of your benefits through COBRA.  After the change in your employment, you’ll receive notification outlining your COBRA benefits, cost to you, and your COBRA election notice allowing you to select the coverage(s) you wish to continue.  This election notice will provide all the dates, deadlines, and rules for making an election.

What is a COBRA Qualifying Event?

A COBRA qualifying event is a situation that causes an individual to lose their group benefit coverage.  Qualifying events determine who the eligible beneficiaries are, and the amount of time COBRA coverage can last.

Qualifying Events for Employees include:
  • Voluntary or involuntary termination of employment
  • Reduction in hours of employment
Qualifying Events for Spouses and Dependent Children include:
  • Voluntary or involuntary termination of the covered employee’s employment
  • Reduction in hours worked by the covered employee
  • Divorce or legal separation from the covered employee
  • Death of the covered employee
  • Loss of dependent child status under the plan rules (Dependent children only)
  • Covered employees becoming entitled to Medicare (This is a rare occurrence)

 

Who is Eligible to Continue Coverage?

Employees, covered spouses, and/or covered dependents all have rights to continued healthcare coverage under COBRA if they had group coverage before your qualifying event.  When you receive your election notice you can determine which family members you want to have continued coverage.

How Long Can My Coverage Last?

Your COBRA qualifying event will determine the maximum amount of time you will remain covered.  Refer to your COBRA election notice, check your COBRApoint portal, or contact us at cobra@naviabenefits.com.

When Can I Make Changes to My Coverage?

You can only make changes to your COBRA coverage during your insurance plan’s open enrollment period.  You can cancel your COBRA coverage at any time.  Once you have cancelled your COBRA coverage you cannot reinstate that coverage.  To cancel your coverage, please contact our COBRA team at cobra@naviabenefits.com or 425-452-3490 / Toll-Free: 1-877-920-9675
